Working in professional kitchen environments at DND facilities, you will follow established recipes and food safety standards while maintaining high quality and presentation standards. Your work directly contributes to the health, morale, and operational readiness of Canadian Armed Forces members and DND civilian employees. Your daily responsibilities include measuring and mixing ingredients, operating commercial baking equipment, monitoring baking times and temperatures, and decorating finished products. You will work as part of a food services team, coordinating with chefs, cooks, and other kitchen staff to meet meal production schedules. You may also be responsible for inventory management, food cost control, and maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment in compliance with health and safety regulations. Bakers in the DND typically work in military kitchens at bases, wings, and other defence establishments across Canada. The role offers a structured work environment with established routines, though shift work and weekend availability may be required depending on the facility's operational needs.

Professional certifications such as Red Seal certification as a Baker are highly valued and recognized across Canada. Once hired, you will receive on-the-job training specific to DND food service operations, including training on military kitchen equipment, food safety protocols, and DND-specific procedures. The Canadian Armed Forces provides professional development opportunities to support your growth, including advanced baking techniques, supervisory training if you pursue advancement, and specialized certifications in food safety and nutrition. DND also supports employees pursuing Red Seal certification and other recognized culinary credentials.

Entry Plans

Positions for Bakers in the DND are filled through competitive recruitment processes managed by the Public Service Commission. Most opportunities are advertised on the Government of Canada's official job board (jobs.gc.ca) and on the DND Civilian Careers website. You can apply directly to posted competitions when they become available at your desired location. Entry is typically at the Employee level with no supervisory responsibilities. Some candidates may enter through apprenticeship or student employment programs if available. The DND also considers lateral moves from other levels of government or the private sector for experienced bakers who meet the requirements. To be competitive, you should have completed a recognized baking apprenticeship or vocational program, or have equivalent work experience in a professional kitchen environment. Some positions may require security clearance eligibility.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and casual work opportunities for Bakers do exist within the DND, though availability varies by location and facility needs. Part-time positions typically offer the same benefits on a prorated basis as full-time roles, including pension eligibility and access to training programs. Flexible work arrangements are less common in baking roles due to the operational nature of military food services and the need for consistent kitchen coverage. However, some facilities may offer flexibility in scheduling within the context of shift rotations. Remote work is not applicable to this position, as the role requires a physical presence in the kitchen to prepare and bake food products. If you are interested in part-time or flexible arrangements, discuss options with the hiring manager during the recruitment process, as accommodations may be possible depending on facility requirements and operational demands.
