Entry Plans
Entry to Director General positions in the federal Public Service occurs through competitive staffing processes managed by the Public Service Commission. Candidates typically progress through lower-level IT and database positions within DND or other federal departments, such as Database Administrator, Senior Database Administrator, or Manager - Database Administration. Lateral moves from other departments or private sector organizations are possible if you meet the required qualifications and compete successfully. Some candidates enter through specialized recruitment campaigns for senior IT leaders. Student or early-career programs do not directly lead to Director General roles; however, completing co-op placements or entry-level IT positions can establish your foundation for advancement. All candidates must be Canadian citizens and obtain security clearance appropriate to the role, typically at the Top Secret level.
Part-Time Options
Director General positions are typically full-time, permanent roles due to the strategic nature of the responsibilities and the expectation of senior executive availability. Part-time arrangements are rarely offered at this classification level. However, the Government of Canada supports flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible, which may include flexible hours or compressed work weeks negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Remote work options have expanded across the Public Service; depending on departmental policy and the specific duties involved, you may have the ability to work remotely for portions of the week. Executive-level positions may require occasional travel for meetings, conferences, or departmental business. Any part-time or flexible arrangement would be discussed during the staffing process and must align with operational needs and DND policies.
