Early Childhood Educator Assistants support the development and care of young children in Department of National Defence (DND) child care facilities. Working under the supervision of Early Childhood Educators, assistants help create safe, nurturing environments where children can learn, play, and grow. This role is essential to the wellbeing of DND families and contributes directly to the operational readiness of the Canadian Armed Forces by providing quality child care services.
Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with age-appropriate activities, maintaining clean and safe play spaces, supporting children's basic needs such as meals and hygiene, and communicating with parents about their child's experiences. You will work as part of a team, collaborating with Early Childhood Educators and other support staff to implement curriculum activities and respond to individual children's developmental needs.
You will work in DND child care centres located on military bases and in some civilian work locations across Canada. The role involves hands-on interaction with children aged from infancy through school age, requiring patience, creativity, and a genuine commitment to child safety and development.

Training
A high school diploma or equivalent (such as an Ontario Secondary School Diploma) is the minimum educational requirement. Many candidates pursue additional qualifications in early childhood education, such as a college diploma or certificate program in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Care and Education (typically a 1-2 year program). While not always mandatory for entry, these credentials strengthen your application and advance your career progression.
First Aid and CPR certification is typically required or expected early in the role. Training in child safeguarding, child development, and emergency procedures is provided by DND. The department supports ongoing professional development through in-service training, workshops on curriculum approaches, and opportunities to work toward formal Early Childhood Education qualifications while employed. Many assistants use this role as a stepping stone to become certified Early Childhood Educators.
