Overview

An Official Languages Policy Advisor provides expert guidance on official languages policy, legislation, and compliance within Department of National Defence operations. You will develop, implement, and monitor policies that ensure the organization meets its obligations under the Official Languages Act and Treasury Board directives. This role bridges human resources management and organizational compliance, requiring a deep understanding of federal language requirements and their practical application across a diverse workforce. Your responsibilities include advising senior management on official languages matters, conducting compliance reviews, developing training and resources, and supporting managers in creating inclusive workplaces where both English and French are valued. You will work with various DND stakeholders to ensure recruitment, staffing, and workplace communications reflect Canada's commitment to official bilingualism. This is primarily a desk-based role with opportunities to engage across the organization, attend meetings, and participate in collaborative projects with HR and operational teams. The work environment is professional and collaborative, often involving consultation with multiple departments, Treasury Board, and Canadian Heritage. You may work independently on policy analysis and recommendations, while also functioning as part of broader HR and organizational development initiatives.

Training

Minimum education: Secondary school diploma or equivalent, with significant relevant work experience. Most candidates hold a post-secondary credential in human resources management, public administration, organizational development, or a related field. Many successful candidates have completed or are pursuing professional designations such as CHRP (Chartered Human Resources Professional) or equivalent. Specialized knowledge required includes a working knowledge of the Official Languages Act, Treasury Board Official Languages (Communications and Services) Policy, and Treasury Board Official Languages (People Management) Policy. Bilingual proficiency (English and French) at an intermediate level minimum is typically required for this position. You should be familiar with federal HR systems, change management, and policy development processes. Professional development opportunities include advanced training in official languages legislation, facilitation and training delivery skills, change management certification, and HR management credentials. The DND and Treasury Board regularly offer workshops on policy updates, compliance standards, and strategic HR initiatives. You are encouraged to maintain current knowledge through professional associations and continuing education in human resources and public sector management.
