Training

To enter this role, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with some positions preferring post-secondary education in business administration, office management, or a related field. Many supervisors bring several years of experience working in administrative support roles before moving into supervision. Professional development opportunities within DND include training in government systems and software (such as SharePoint, SAP, and DND-specific platforms), project management fundamentals, and supervisory skills. The Public Service offers formal training through the Canada School of Public Service, including courses on leadership, conflict resolution, and performance management. Many supervisors pursue certifications such as the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) designation or Microsoft Office specialist credentials. Ongoing learning is supported through mentoring programs, learning management systems, and tuition assistance for relevant courses.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several federal government pathways. The most common route is through a Public Service Commission (PSC) competition for the Supervisor - Administrative Support position, which typically requires 2-5 years of relevant administrative experience. Many candidates first work in Administrative Assistant or Clerk positions within DND or other federal departments, building experience before competing for supervisory roles. The federal government also accepts lateral moves from other departments—if you are already a Public Service employee in an equivalent administrative role, you may apply for internal competitions. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools created by PSC competitions, where successful candidates are ranked and hired as vacancies occur. Student and early-career programs, such as the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign or the Federal Student Work Experience Program, can help you gain initial government experience and build a pathway to permanent administrative roles. Veterans and other priority groups may have access to dedicated recruitment initiatives. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and pass security screening appropriate to the work environment.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are commonly available for Supervisor - Administrative Support positions, particularly in larger DND offices where multiple administrative teams exist. Many supervisors work full-time permanent positions (37.5 hours per week), but opportunities for reduced hours, job sharing, or compressed work weeks may be negotiated with management depending on operational needs. Remote work options have expanded since 2020 and vary by unit—supervisors managing primarily digital workflows may perform some duties from home, though regular on-site presence is typically required for in-person supervision and team coordination. Flexible scheduling is sometimes possible to accommodate personal needs, subject to maintaining coverage during core operational hours. Part-time and contract positions in administrative support supervision do exist and may offer 20-30 hours per week. All federal public servants enjoy access to work-life balance programs, including leave provisions, Employee Assistance Programs, and telework policies. Specific arrangements depend on the individual DND unit, operational requirements, and collective agreement provisions governing your position.
