You will oversee the design, implementation, and administration of databases that support military operations, logistics, and administrative functions across Canada and internationally. This leadership role combines technical expertise with people management, requiring you to stay current with database technologies while guiding your team through complex projects and day-to-day operations. While your office is typically located at a DND facility, this role may involve occasional travel to other locations and after-hours work for critical system maintenance or emergencies. Entry Plans

To enter this career in the DND civilian workforce, you will typically apply through a Government of Canada job competition posted on the DND careers website or the GC Jobs portal. Most positions are advertised as 'Supervisor - Database and Database Administration' or similar titles within the IT-03 to IT-04 classification range, depending on seniority and team size. You can enter at lower levels (such as Database Analyst or Administrator) through regular competitions, and advance to supervisor roles through promotions or lateral moves as opportunities arise. The Public Service uses staffing pools to expedite hiring; if you're selected for a pool, you may be appointed to multiple positions without additional competitions. Some positions may be filled through acting or secondment arrangements, allowing you to demonstrate supervisory capabilities before permanent appointment. Postsecondary students or recent graduates may enter the federal government through recruitment initiatives or student employment programs, which can lead to permanent positions once you meet education requirements. Lateral transfers from other federal departments or Canadian Armed Forces members transitioning to civilian roles are also common entry paths. Internal DND employees may advance to supervisor positions through promotions when positions become available. All applicants must pass security screening appropriate to the role's security level.

Part-Time Options

The Supervisor - Database and Database Administration role is typically full-time, as database teams require consistent coverage and supervisory presence. However, the federal Public Service does offer flexibility options depending on operational needs and management approval. Telework and hybrid arrangements are increasingly available in IT roles at DND. Depending on your team's responsibilities and the nature of database administration work, you may be able to work remotely several days per week, with in-office time required for team meetings, on-site system maintenance, or critical operations support. Some database administration tasks can be performed from anywhere with secure connectivity, though certain maintenance windows or emergency response situations may require on-site presence. Part-time or reduced-hour positions are less common at the supervisor level but may be available in specific circumstances. If part-time work is important to you, you can discuss flexible arrangements during the hiring process or with your manager after appointment. Most supervisory roles in database administration are structured as full-time positions due to the responsibility for team leadership and 24/7 system availability requirements. Remote work options and flexible schedules are negotiated on a case-by-case basis within DND's operational framework and collective agreement provisions.
