Entry Plans

Most positions are filled through open competitions posted on the Government of Canada Job Bank. You can apply when notices appear for Supervisor - Other Human Resources (HR) Programs positions within DND or other federal departments. The Public Service Commission may establish staffing pools of qualified candidates for multiple vacancies, allowing faster hiring across the organization. If you've already competed successfully and are on a pool, departments can appoint you without another competition. Lateral moves from other HR roles into supervisory positions are common for experienced government HR professionals. If you currently work in the Public Service at the appropriate level, you may apply through internal competitions with enhanced consideration. Some candidates transition into this role after working in non-supervisory HR positions at DND or other federal agencies. This internal pathway allows you to develop HR expertise before moving into people management. Student and graduate recruitment programs may occasionally lead to HR positions that could eventually progress to supervisory levels.

Part-Time Options

Full-time permanent positions are standard for Supervisor roles due to the people management and operational responsibilities required. However, the Public Service does accommodate flexible work arrangements where possible. Depending on operational needs and management approval, some supervisors may negotiate compressed work weeks, flexible hours, or telework options. Remote work may be available for portions of the week, though regular in-office presence is typically expected for team leadership and stakeholder meetings. If you require part-time work, discuss options with your manager or HR representative. Shift work is uncommon for this supervisory classification. Career-related leave, unpaid leave, and phased retirement programs are available under Public Service collective agreements and Treasury Board policies.
